Expecting Goodness!

Expecting Goodness is like waiting for the right train on the wrong platform! The train is right and it’s there right in front of you and moreover you have the ticket, but still you would miss it!

Let me tell this as a story…

Once upon a time when the world was still green and the tallest buildings were the ones with single roofs and the villages had more cattle than men; there was a small village which had the backyard of its last house as the densest forest.

If you can take a moment and try to imagine the village, it would be a real treat to your imagination. A peaceful small village having few huts, with adjoining barns bigger than the huts, scattered. To add the beauty it had a cute little garden in front of a small temple at the center of the village. The water from the wells of that village was sweeter than the modern sugar these days. There are many other beautiful things about that village but I leave all that to your imagination this Sunday.

Adjoining the village was a large pasture separating it from the forest. All the cattle from the village used to go there and graze till they got bored of grazing. Now strange but true, the grass on that pasture could talk among themselves and every morning they would wake up praying the Almighty to spare them alive from the cattle. They sat there the whole day expecting goodness from the cattle. Can you imagine the cattle, known for being the most peaceful animals, had scared the grass to their death and even kept killing them.

One day, suddenly from nowhere, came running a huge tiger and killed a cow and pulled it off into the forest where, well you know, it had a feast. The cattle, those which were still alive, were so scared seeing all that fierce attack and blood flow and all that they even stopped getting out of their barns. They just refused moving out of that protection.

The grass waited for few days and then celebrated that finally the goodness was blessed on them (via tiger). While on the other side the cattle, which also could talk among themselves, strange but true, were by now growing hungry and started praying to the Almighty for some goodness from the tiger that had scared them to death.

One day, as the summer came in, the only pond in the forest dried with only few drops of water left in it and the tiger decided to leave that forest and it moved on to a different forest. The cattle were back on the pasture and happy thinking that their prayers were answered with lots of goodness (via draught). While on the other side, the villagers started getting worried as the water levels in their wells kept going down. Let us leave the villagers to do something about that and move on with the article.

The only thing that I wanted to tell was…

It’s not like there is no goodness in the world. There is lot of goodness, kindness, sweetness floating around us. The problem is, we concentrate so much on that and we keep on expecting goodness from one source that we end up missing enjoy the real goodness when we are blessed with it.

It is exactly like keeping only one window of the house open and expecting all the air to flow in from that. You have to keep all the windows open and the fresh air can blow in from any window at any moment. Goodness is also same, it can flow in and kiss you any moment, any place, and just from anywhere.

So the best thing to do is, just keep doing goodness and spreading kindness and one fine day you will get it back, the time when you need it, not at the time when you want it!

Keep spreading goodness… This world needs more of it…

Happiness :-)

Good Morning Readers! Remember one of my old blogs “Happiness is a Choice!!” ?? If not then here is the link - http://sundayreaders.blogspot.com/2013/06/happiness-is-choice.html

Today’s blog is nothing but a very sweet example to support that post.

It was a very hot day and a dry one too. The burning Sun was a bit too angry on something that had been bothering him since zillion years. It seemed pretty sure that he was going to burn the whole Earth. His every ray hitting our green planet was like the sharp arrows piercing through the body taking out the life from every living being.

I guess I had been sweating so much that the T-shirt I was wearing looked like it was just washed and hadn’t even dried off. It was much more irritating when it started sticking to my body everywhere and my hands got busier itching every part they could reach on to; limited to my body and not any part of a middle aged man sitting beside me yawning every few minutes. The irritation just doubled when that man started getting sleepy and his head started falling off his throat and landed on my shoulder every time. When it landed, I got irritated because it landed and when it rose up, I got irritated thinking when it would land again.

The chattering sounds of every passenger in that train had overcome the evergreen “chuk chuk” sound of our lovely Indian trains. Most of the voices were from the middle aged female voice boxes and at few times the males voice boxes mixed up too, sometime accompanied by crying children. Normally the crying and whining of children followed the yelling sound of the cool drink or fast food vendor’s yell of the list of his items.

I felt that I was getting irritated to my limits and the only best part of the journey was I had got a seat. There were many passengers standing who looked like were swinging just more than natural. Their eyes were looking everywhere like an eagle looking for its prey, searching for passengers to get up with some excuse and they could steal the seats and rest their legs. It was the only good part of that scorching heat that all the water in my body was flowing out as sweat and I had no need to leave my seat for passing out the water.

As I looked at my watch, it was 1 PM and still 2 hours of journey was left to reach Belgaum, one of the most beautiful cities in South India. Calm and cool, it had the right blend of culture and gloss.

They say as the journey nears the destination, it grows more desperate. And I was experiencing it. I had nothing to help me out. The novel I had got with me sat silently in my bag. I couldn’t even move and it was far from reality to open up that and read it in that rush. Just then I heard a loud cry of a small child. He was standing in front of his mother and crying. Big drops of water had started flowing down his chubby cheeks and it looked like the gates of the dam in his nose would open up any time and his mother’s hankie was the most needed thing now. He even started hitting violently on his mother’s lap. But we all know lovely moms and their sweet golden hearts. Even that just multiplies their love towards their children. She was trying to carry him and make him sit on her lap and was explaining everything in the world to him just to console him. Anyone in that compartment could notice the pain in her eyes when her kid started crying, yet her face carried a consoling smile on her face.

I could no longer focus on the crying child and moved along the bench towards the window, pitying the mom. As soon as my eyes reached the window, I saw another kid. He too was of the same age of the crying kid. His parents were sitting on the same bench as mine separated to me by the sleepy uncle with a frequently falling head. He was curiously staring at the crying kid for some time and then again turned back.

I just got curious since I had nothing else to do. I started observing the kid. Wearing a dark blue colored T-shirt with lots of attractive colorful design on it and a black colored multi-pocket Bermuda, he was busy doing something. He too was standing and was turned toward his parents. He dint had the window seat either, he was not getting any air to blow onto his body, and he was sweating too. In short, he shared exactly the same situation as of mine and the crying kid. Yet he was busy doing something and it looked like he dint even care where he was.

The noise, the heat, the sweat, the crowd, the hunger; everything just ceased to exist for him. Upon that, I was more than shocked when he smiled and even gave out a small laugh. I could control my curiosity no longer and moved my ass a bit forward and bent my back forward. Bending a little more helped me look at what he was so busy with, that kept him engrossed; moreover kept him happy kicking off the irritation from him.

He had few coins, probably given by his parents, along with a very small space on the bench by his father, who had crossed his legs and made some space for his child to play. The child used to arrange the coins one upon other and then used to roll another coin towards the piled up coins. Being unaware of the physics, he never calculated anything and just used to roll the coin towards them. I could not stare much longer but I was sure there was a small probability for the rolling coin to hit the piled up coins even in that moving train and whenever that happened a cute smile escaped his mouth.

For any onlooker it was just a game and a smiling kid. But for me it was one of the biggest lessons of my life.
Many a times in our life, such situations come, when we cannot control them, but we can control ourselves. And “HAPPPINESS” is one of them because, happiness is not found in air or water or in a train’s honk or in anything else. It lies within us; we just need to feel it.

We are the owners of ourselves and it is completely on us to select the right option of being happy and feel it, ignoring all the forces that try to irritate us. It is our duty to find what is right for us in any moment and keep ourselves happy and satisfied. One of the best ways of achieving that is being simple. Just like the kid, who was happy in such a situation where most of the other persons sharing the same situation were either whining or yelling at their situations. He was just being simple and playing a simple game in whatever was available to him and was busy within himself; he avoided all the factors that were trying to irritate him and was enjoying himself.

That was the moment I knew what I had to do and the rest of that train journey was never anymore irritating for me!

Be Happy, Have a Happy Sunday… Thanks for being a Sunday Reader…

God Said...

As the man opened his eyes, the first ray of the sun that hit his eyes teased him and the second ray that hit his eyes yelled at him to wake up and start another wonderful day. The other rays just kept echoing that statement.

He smiled at the bright sunny day and thanked God for providing another great chance to set right the wrongs and to mend all the possible ways to avoid any more wrongs. With a wide smile he stepped out of his cozy bed and walked to the restroom rubbing his eyes. It just took a quick couple of minutes for him to get fresh and slid out the curtains on the windows. More sunlight stepped in and lighted the room.

He then walked into the kitchen and prepared a cup of coffee. The first sip that he tasted confirmed him that he just got better at making coffee. It only helped him improve his mood. The caffeine was working right and triggering his nerves and helping him to get ready for that day. He then walked towards the door, holding the cup of coffee and opened the door. Bending down and picking up the news paper as he turned around to get into the house, he saw that gave him a shock of lifetime.

The lock on the door was broken and there were two sharp shots on the edge of the wooden door, from a sharp tool, one just above the lock and another bit above the first one, which clearly explained everything. There was no need to say anything else. The broken lock and the two shots clearly said that there was an uninvited guest at door the last night when he was peacefully sleeping.

As is usual, it took a moment for him to first realize the situation and then a whole of a bunch of minutes to cope up with what had happened. When he had finished realizing the situation and his mind had stabilized, he started checking the door in detail. One thing was confirmed, the door was still standing strong. Only the lock was broken and everything else seemed fine. He had only one thing to be satisfied of now, everything inside the house was safe and the door was still strong. But the smile on his face had faded already, taking the cheerfulness along with it. There was a blank expression on his face and his wide open clueless eyes just helped him look scared. And yes, he was scared.

He now had a bad start to a good day. Walking inside the house with the cup of coffee still in his hand and the news paper in the other hand he sat down quietly on the cushion with a mind that was not able to think of anything. Finally when he shook his head and took decision of getting the lock repaired he felt back to life and started thinking on various other things. As he looked at the coffee, calculating the various ifs and buts, he observed that the coffee had cooled down and the cream was floating on top of the coffee.

It was now the time when he had regained his consciousness and was out of the shock. He started thinking of everything and started yelling at God for everything that had happened. God had caused the robber to select his house, he had helped robber break his lock, and he had helped to break the security. It was all because of God. The coffee had turned cold, he could not read the news paper, his day was spoiled, he now had to be more careful with the security, he had to get the lock repaired, he could not spend the rest of the day as planned, he had a tornado hit his mind and just what not.

The man was now growing angry with every thought passing through his mind. He was now on the edge of yelling loudly at God, the same God whom he had thanked an hour before for a wonderful day. And yes, he was right, as the same God had now ruined his day. He asked every question coming onto his mind and it seemed there was no response from anywhere.

Finally he said, “I always pray. I always believe you, I follow you. I am the one who is always breathing because I think you are the one in air giving life to me and now you are hiding? After doing all this to your follower? Good. Where were you when the robber was trying to break open the door?”

There was no response!

He started his daily activities, getting the lock repaired, setting up more security and all other stuffs that took his whole day. Finally with a heartless meal he decided to skip into sleep earlier than regular. But as he closed, the only thought of the broken lock project in front of his eyes and miraculously he was able to see it with closed eyes, as clear as ever.

Rolling onto every possible side he tried his best to sleep, but the hard he tried the more he lost his sleep.

And at last he lost and opened up his eyes. The first thing he saw was a picture of God placed in front of his bed. He frowned and asked, “Just tell me where were you when all this happened? Don’t you love me?”

And then God said, “I love you very much. That’s the only reason I was in the Door when this all happened. You could afford to lose a broken lock but I could never see you suffering with a broken door and lost things. Good night my son!”

Happiness is a Choice!!

Happiness!! Isn't it something that we never understood but we always wanted to savor? But what is happiness? How can we achieve it? Is it available on sale? Is there any way we can earn it? Can we live with it forever?

Seems pretty difficult questions. We may try few random answers but as you go on thinking deeper, you never get to the bottom of these answers. And wait! If you all are expecting me to answer these questions here, today, in my blog then you are wrong! I am just going to tell you all wonderful people a short sweet story!

As it goes… Once upon a time when the Sun was still round and the frogs still made that queer sound and the trees still grew from the ground; there was a city well known all across the globe. In that noisy city lived two twins. Sonu and Monu, like any other twins they two loved each other a lot no matter what happened and how far their sibling quarrels went.

When they stood facing each other, people wondered if it was only one and the other a mirror. They looked exact the same only difference, Sonu was seven and half minutes older than Monu. They had studied separately but grew together. They had different tastes but shared everything. They now worked in separate firms but lived together. To look at, no one could make out who was who among them, but being with them also made no difference, they both were equally patience and soft spoken.

As days passed, Sonu started noticing changes in Monu. Monu was growing restless, his face clearly reflected the depression in his heart. It was a clear bright full moon day’s night with the thousands of naughty little stars twinkling at each other as though they were cracking PJs and having fun among themselves and a big round white ball, just like a weightless cotton ball freely floating in the air, when Monu was sitting on his armchair and staring at the night sky without really enjoying the beautifully lit sky.

Sonu walked into Monu’s room and placed his hand on Monu’s shoulder. Suddenly waking up from his thoughts, Monu turned back and looked blankly at his brother. Sonu smiled peacefully and sat on the bed beside the armchair and looked outside the huge window. The silence prevailed for few minutes.

Breaking the silence, Sonu said, “Monu, do you notice that tiny little star between the three bright stars?”

“Where?”

Sonu got up and moved across to the window. Pointing his arm towards a group of stars, he said, “Right over there, two stars are very bright and the third one is little dull. Right in between those is a tiny little star. It looks so small, but when it shines just look at it. It has the strength of overpowering all three of them only if it was nearer to us”

“Yeah right”

The silence again grew. After few minutes, Sonu said, “What’s the problem Monu? Why are you depressed these days? I haven’t seen you happy since a week. Is there something bothering you?”

Monu turned at his brother for a second and then again turning back to the sky, “I am not sure what is biting me” he continued, “but something is really wrong with me. I am not able to find happiness in anything that I do. I am not finding any success. Whatever I do, whereever I go it just seems that everything is irritating me.”

“This is pretty bad Monu. Why dint you tell me before?”

“I don’t know Sonu. I just don’t know what to do. How to set things right? All this has been drilling my mind since a week.”

“It’s so easy. Just walk back and mend everything that went wrong and be the same as you were earlier. Everything will start falling in place and as they say, ‘Time heals everything!’”

“Yes Sonu you are right. That’s what I had decided to do tomorrow. But…” Monu break in between and fell short of words. He was still lost in searching the brightest star in the sky.

“But what?” Sonu asked.

“But what if nothing falls in place. Even if everything falls in place but will it be the same after that? What if
I start feeling the same again? What if I grow more depressed? It seems to me that happiness is a myth”

Sonu, suddenly turning towards his brother said, “No Monu. Why are you speaking like that? Happiness is not a myth. It’s just everywhere, it’s in you, around you, it’s in air we breathe, it’s in the water that we drink, it’s just in everything we do everything we feel and what not.”

“Then why am I missing it Sonu? Can you tell me how can I get that happiness?”

“Monu! It’s the simplest thing in the world. Imagine happiness as Oxygen and everything else as other components of air. Now when you have air around you, you will definitely intake it all, including the dust, the smell and even this Oxygen. It’s then deep in your body, the air is filtered nicely and your body chooses only the Oxygen and kicks off the rest.”

“Sonu, I am not getting” Monu said looking at Sonu with his eyes wide open and his jaws dropped down.

Smiling at his brother, Sonu continued, “You got the Oxygen part? Right?”

“Yep” Monu nodded, still with his eyes wide open.

“Now coming onto happiness. Whatever you intake is a mix of everything brother. You just have to filter out the rest and grasp in the happiness. You will have to feel that happiness, enjoy it and then respond back.

Now look you saw the sky, what did you see? Practically nothing. Because you were busy enough not to filter out what you took in. I was free enough to filter my view and notice that tiny little star shine brightly and found happiness in that.”

The expression on Monu was changing but his eyes were still wide open while he turned to find that tiny little star.

Leaving Monu to enjoy the picturesque view of the sky, Sonu continued, “Now Monu imagine you are working hard at your office and suddenly your manager comes barking at you. Do you take in that? Yes you would. But I will never take it in. I will listen to him, take in if his words have any work or advice for me and forget the rest. They are the dust particles. Instead I just simply turn back to my laptop, start working, do my work, and enjoy a cup of coffee, because that’s Oxygen. That’s were happiness lies.

You are having a chat with your friend. Something turns up and he suddenly irritates you or annoys you. You have choice on how you react. Either shout back on him, start a quarrel, turn the environment sour, end up in a disgusted quarrel resulting in a bad mood and hurt friendship. Else, think for a moment, filter out his anger, understand his position, take in the real friendship that existed among you guys, console him, if you fail, change the topic, if even that turns useless, just remain silent. When he is back out of his anger you will be the first person he would talk to and thank. That’s happiness. Wasn’t it easy to filter?

You are rushing to office and almost running on the pavement when a car speeding by spills dirt onto your trousers. You shout at the guy without getting anything. Curse yourself. Scold your luck. Hate the world. Kick the pavement. Decide not to vote the government and by then you are left with nothing more to think and reach office late with rest of your day spoilt. But if, in the same situation, imagine you spend a moment filtering the things and taking in the right decision and giving out the right reaction by ignoring the car, decide to be more careful next time, hurry to the office, wash off the dirt, walk to your seat, tap on the shoulders of your teammate, crack a little joke on what happened, ask him for coffee and then start work. You know now what you did?”

Monu nodded his head signaling a big NO.

“You just chose happiness dumb! Imagine you are sitting with your girlfriend.”

Watching Monu blush, Sonu stopped for a second and then continued, “Monu. I said to imagine, you don’t really have a girlfriend. Now stop blushing like a girl and listen.”

Monu’s face turned serious and he tried punching Sonu on his right shoulder. Escaping the punch, Sonu continued, “Now you are with your girlfriend sitting in a Coffee shop having a nice talk. Suddenly something turns wrong. She starts yelling at you. But you remain calm and console her. If not successful then let the time do its magic. You chose happiness and saved your wonderful relationship.

Let me tell you one more situation. You have been assigned to a new project. You are learning new thing, working hard, spending your whole day, but still nothing is working out. Results aren’t coming in. You start getting irritated. Curse the project and start hating everything. See now you just took in dust instead of Oxygen and that will only result in bad health!

Instead you stay calm, start thinking back. Find out solutions, learn again and again. Take help, take advice. Rearrange your work. Start all over again. Aim at the results and concentrate on the work. You now took in the Oxygen and that would only result in a better delivery of your project, which is nothing but a good health and nice mood, which is nothing but happiness!

A guy stares at you in bus, smile at him, else ignore him and look at the beautiful world outside. A guy is sleeping our shoulder in train, get up from the seat walk to the door and enjoy the cool breeze. You drop coffee, look at the design the flowing coffee is making and try to make out the map of the country the design is resembling instead of cribbing. You fail in a test, concentrate more on your studies, and enjoy the subject. You are getting beaten from you teacher and feel ashamed, it’s your mistake, stop cursing your teacher and your fellow friends for laughing at you and stop thinking it as end of your schooling, instead learn from it and prove him that you just changed into a boy he always wanted you to be and your fellow classmates start admiring the boy at whom they were laughing few days ago. You don’t get recognized for your team award, forget it, work hard, else look out for what you missed and make that up. You had a quarrel with your wife, ignore it, instead walk into the house in evening carrying a bouquet of roses and surprise her. The food isn’t tasting good, adjust, it’s not your last meal. You are sweating badly in a queue, and the smell is driving you crazy, try holding your breath and look at your watch for how many seconds you can do so and remember the times you played the breath holding games with your friends in swimming pool.

You watch sunrise, pick the beauty. You go to a waterfall, try enjoying the chilled water. You are walking alone on a road completely exhausted, pick the cool breeze and the wagging tail of dog trying to pick its best food from the garbage. You watch a film forcefully, try having fun among the lines of the film, or else enjoying the heroine's beauty. You end up waiting for your friend on a sunny sweating day in front of shop, stop being annoyed and use the time in having a soft drink or taking a stroll in the shop or noticing a naughty little boy licking the ice cream that melted and flowed down on his arm till his elbow and his mother trying to avoid him in doing that while opening her wallet to take out her hankie to swipe off the ice cream off his arm.”

Monu was now smiling imagining all these little things and the happiness that popped out from them. He was lost in a world of his own. It seemed his body was now being transformed into the minute Alveoli of the Lungs that observe only the Oxygen into the blood! He, in his heart, now pledged he would always take a moment and think twice and would choose the right reaction he would give on every action that happened on him.

His face that portrayed a sullen silence since week was now glowing brightly like the small kid carelessly licking ice cream off his arm.

He turned at Sonu and his eyes were already thanking his brother. Sonu was also smiling happily noticing the change in his brother’s face.

After a silence of few seconds, Monu turned back at Sonu and asked, “Sonu, how did you manage all this?”

Sonu smiled at him and said, “Few years ago, when I was travelling in bus, I noticed the writing on the back of a Truck. There was a long line written on it, with may be ten to fifteen words. But because of the speed of the bus, I could read only the first four letters.”

“What were those?” Monu asked, not able to control his curiosity.

“They were, ‘Happiness is a Choice’”

“I am happy I could read only those and chose in only those words”

“Did you never bothered about the remaining part of that sentence?”

“Monu, as I read that, I then and there itself made a choice of not bothering about the rest and from that moment my application of ‘Happiness is a Choice’ started. I had got the message what I needed.”

“Very true Sonu. Happiness is definitely a choice. I will from now on make the right choices.” Monu said turning back at the tiny little star which was still shining naughtily challenging the other bigger stars!

I would like to take a moment more in telling you readers that the topic on Happiness was suggested to me by one of my SundayReader…
And, the quote ‘Happiness is Choice’ is inspired from the “Mr. Monk Goes Camping” episode of my favorite serial, Monk…
