“Hmm, this is perfect!” I said to
myself, taking the first sip of Café Mocha.
Sitting alone at the corner most
table of the Starbucks store, I had waited a whole of two minutes to take a
good look around the place before I tasted the first sip of my Mocha. I agreed with myself that it was my favorite seat, not because it allowed me a view of the complete
store and also across the street outside but because that particular seat allowed
me to lean back on the wall as comfortably as I wished. With the second sip, I
switched on my laptop determined to finish off writing my next post for this
blog.
Not before I had finished off
half of the Mocha and had yet written not even two lines, I was already
distracted. Rising my lips I took a deep breath. Lifting my head, I turned
towards the street and then into the store. Though it was quite, there were
seven more people in the store; a couple, two boys of my age busy with their
laptops, a lady busy with her iPad, and the two store workers. Thinking of what
could keep everyone in this world so busy and occupied; I turned back to the
street. It was wonderful summer view out in the street.
Quickly turning back to my Laptop
with an Idea, I deleted the lines I had typed and started with the topic – City in Summer. Again, not being satisfied
with that, I took another sip and turned back to the street. As soon as I
turned to the street, I saw an old couple walking towards the store from the
opposite direction. By looking at them, I guessed their age to be anything
between fifty and sixty but upon taking a closer look at their faces I added
another five years to both of them. The way they had dressed, the way they had
held each other’s hands and the way they walked; smiling, holding hands cozily,
taking in the summer sun, enjoying the view on the street, taking matching
steps; all this had clearly taken out five years from them and I was sure might
have added a lot of happiness in their life.
As they reached the door of
Starbucks, the husband pulled the door and held it open while the wife entered
into the store with a broad smile on her face. She waited until the husband
stepped into the store and joined her. They then again walked together to the
counter.
Already distracted and with all
the mood of writing drained out, my mind had somehow made up that it was being
drawn towards the couple and had given up its effort in avoiding the force of that pull. Comforting
myself in that chair, I followed the couple, directed by my mind. When they
turned towards me, I saw, with a sideways look from the corner of my eyes, that
they had taken two Coffees and two Brownies. I had to keep my head down until
they turned away from me or sat down at some table. When I lifted my head
again, after few minutes, I saw both of them sit opposite to each other at a
table in front of me which was just beside the table where another couple seated.
Once seated, they looked at each
other with all the love in this world and smiled. The wife had lifted her coffee
cup but waited for the husband to take the first sip of coffee and all the
while he was taking a sip from his cup, she kept looking at him affectionately. Then
she took a sip and placed the cup back on the table. The husband had still held
the coffee cup in his hands as they started talking to each other. Then the
wife dug a spoon into the brownie and took a bite of it. All my attention was
already drawn towards them and was locked and now I was immersed in looking at
them. It was when the wife dug spoon again into the brownie and held out the
spoon near the husband’s mouth for him to take the bite that I felt the hairs
on the back of my neck stand looking at the love and affection they had towards each other.
Blinking for the first time since
I had watched them sip their coffees, I saw the wife smile broadly when the
husband said something placing the cup back on the table. Suddenly the other
couple who were seated very near to them turned towards the couple and smiled. They
both wished the old couple unitedly with a louder tone, “Happy Anniversary” and
clapped.
Then the lady with the iPad got
up and wished the old couple taking a few steps towards them and all the other
people followed this. It was when the younger couple looked at me I realized
that I was still sitting at my chair with my eyes open at them. Blinking a few
times and taking a deep breath I got up from my seat and walked to their seat
and mumbled the two words of wishes for them. A small fear of being seen
watching them was making its round inside my stomach making me feel awkward.
“So how many years did you both
complete in each others’ arms?” the young wife asked.
“This is our fiftieth anniversary”
the old husband said turning towards his wife who had a hint of blush on her
face.
All those present in the store
exclaimed and clapped while the old couple thanked everyone for the wishes.
“Fifty years together! That’s awesome!”
the young wife said with her eyes wide open.
“Yes, this is our Golden jubilee”
the old wife said.
After another round of
exclamations and few more wishes and appreciations, the old husband turned
towards all of us and said, “Fifty years back we both had met each other in a
coffee shop back in our city and that was the moment when our eyes exchanged
the first look and our hearts started beating together. There was no looking
back since that day and the next month we were married!”
“From then until this day we
celebrate our marriage anniversary in a coffee shop with coffees and brownies
and every year it feels like the time turned all over again and we again
exchanged that first glance and again our hearts started beating together and
beating for each other” the wife said.
“And again we start the year all
over again. The meetings, the adorations, and the vows” the husband continued.
“It is really great completing
fifty years together! Fifty years of love! How strong could be the bond and the
love. An achievement.” the other lady who was sitting with an iPad said.
“No, no, that’s not an
achievement. It’s simply love and once love it’s always love. Because…” the old
husband said and looked at his wife who continued, still keeping her smile, “Because
Love is Ageless!”
Wish you all dear readers a wonderful Sunday!
